Chargers and Inverters
You will most likely require some charging and conversion equipment for your application, We have tried to summarise here the equipment that might be needed, but do please contact us if you are unsure of your needs
Mains Chargers
These convert mains power (usually 230 vac) to your system power (can be 24 vdc to 144 vdc).
Chargers are normally carried on-board, but can be shore based. Both types will require an 'umbilical' to your boat.
Good chargers are fairly sophisticated to get the very best out of your battery. Once you know the size (Ah) of battery, the system voltage and the time available for charging we can suggest a suitable size charger.
DC Converters and Cross-chargers
Normally your 'house' battery(s) will be of a lower voltage (12 v or 24 v) than your motive battery. as you will have dispensed with your alternator when 'throwing out' your internal combustion engine you will require a converter to charge your 'house' battery.
Inverters
On larger boats there may well be some 'domestic' equipment that runs off mains voltage (230 vac). You will then require an inverter to transform your motive DC power to a higher voltage AC power.
